The other guy will play ukulele or piano SOMETIMES but relies a lot on backing tracks. The two guys are pretty good musicians but most of the show is just a backing track. The lamest thing about them is their live shows. They are kinda emo, but they use a lot of different sounds to appeal to everyone a little bit which is cool. This has been true for a lot of bands such as the Smiths or Nirvana. The music talks about a lot of things teens can relate to and does it fairly well.
As a teenager though I can see how it might be popular. I think they're a band you should wait and get the greatest hits for. I think they're alright for radio play but that's about it. I know a lot of people that LOVE 21 pilots and would probably die for them. I'm not into much hip hop which their music uses a lot of. They're alright and I think Blurryface is actually a very great album but it's just not really my thing. I encourage you to listen to their last release Vessel and their more lyrically deep self-titled album. Their latest release just did so through basic language. One more thing: Just because lyrics involve angst and struggle doesn't make them inherently worse or distasteful – we all face struggles and insecurities throughout our lives, and that's what twenty one pilots is channeling in their music. Remember, if you're only listening to a the most popular tracks, you're listening to the popular taste, not necessarily the band's best.
I would restrain from making a blanket judgment on a band before really listening to their full discography. I was surprised to see Stressed Out get as much attention as it did when it's not the strongest representation of their music. Blurryface (their latest album which has blown up) is decidedly more mainstream-oriented than their previous releases, intentionally or not, but I would still consider their sound innovative, and if nothing else, for their seamless mix of genres. Twenty one pilots is far from bad they're different.
